Le Corbusier: The legacy of a modernist architectural visionary

Le Corbusier, born Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, remains one of the most influential figures in 20th-century modernism, impacting both architecture and urban planning. His philosophy viewed buildings as ‘machines for living,’ emphasizing human needs through principles such as pilotis, open floor plans, and roof terraces.

In Sweden, his radical urban planning proposals for Stockholm suggested the massive redevelopment of Norrmalm and Södermalm. His vision included the demolition of much of Gamla stan, preserving only the Royal Palace and Storkyrkan, to make way for high-density housing and open public spaces.

A new book by architectural historian Winfried Nerdinger explores the life and influence of Le Corbusier. The work examines the interrelation between his architectural designs, his training as an engraver, and his theoretical writings, illustrating how he unified art and theory to reshape the modern understanding of the built environment.
