Île-de-France high schoolers receive Asus Chromebooks amid AI concerns

Since the start of the 2026 school year, hundreds of thousands of high school students in the Île-de-France region have been receiving the Asus CM1406 Chromebook. This device replaces previous Windows PCs as part of a regional initiative to provide lightweight, connected machines optimized for online schoolwork, including tools like Gmail, Docs, and Slides.

While the hardware has been noted for its aluminum chassis, battery life, and fluid performance for browser-based tasks, the transition has sparked discussion regarding the shift toward the Google ecosystem.

Parallel to the hardware rollout, concerns have been raised regarding the increasing presence of artificial intelligence in educational settings. Critics argue that the use of AI by students may come at the expense of human intelligence and critical thinking, warning that reliance on digital platforms could lead to a loss of intellectual freedom and the reinforcement of dominant ideological biases found in AI-generated content.
