Le Porge faces tourism crisis after devastating Gironde wildfires

Following the massive wildfires in Gironde that ravaged 42,000 hectares between July 22 and August 1, the coastal town of Le Porge is facing a severe economic crisis as the summer tourist season collapses. Despite favorable weather and warm ocean temperatures, local businesses are reporting a near-total absence of visitors.

Local entrepreneurs, including surf school director Pierre Vienne and restaurant owners, report minimal attendance. Many tourists from other regions have canceled their trips due to the perception that the area was entirely destroyed by fire. Additionally, technical issues like GPS applications incorrectly marking reopened roads as closed have hindered access to the area.

The human toll remains significant; the fires resulted in the evacuation of 220,000 people in the department and destroyed nearly 200 homes in Le Porge. While some local establishments have reopened, they are operating in a state of uncertainty, relying on local solidarity rather than the expected influx of seasonal tourism.
