Le Porge, France: Residents accuse authorities of neglect as wildfires devastate community

A massive forest fire near Bordeaux engulfed the coastal town of Le Porge in late July 2026, destroying nearly 200 homes and leaving the 3,500‑resident community in ruins. Residents say evacuation orders arrived only after the flames had already surrounded the town, and they received no emergency SMS warnings. They allege that firefighting resources were diverted to protect the nearby luxury villas of Cap Ferret, prompting a WhatsApp group of over 500 locals to seek legal counsel from Bordeaux lawyer Sylvain Galinat and consider criminal and civil action.

Firefighters continue to battle “zombie fires” that smolder in the peat soils of the burned area. According to firefighter Cyril Venière, the fire has scarred about 42,000 hectares of forest and dunes and will require weeks or months of monitoring. Around 2,500 volunteers from the DFCI, chaired by Bruno Lafon, are helping to clear ash and extinguish lingering hotspots, while rains expected later in the season may finally quell the blazes.
