Le Porge residents face insurance battles after Gironde megafire

Residents of Le Porge in the Gironde region are facing significant challenges following a massive wildfire in July that burned over 40,000 hectares and forced the evacuation of 220,000 people. In Le Porge, 183 out of 240 homes were destroyed.

Victims are currently struggling to secure fair compensation from insurance companies. Some residents have expressed concerns regarding the application of depreciation coefficients, which they argue do not reflect the true cost of rebuilding their homes to their original state. To assist, the insurer Macif has deployed a mobile unit to the town center to facilitate direct communication.

As the reconstruction process begins, French Minister Sébastien Lecornu is scheduled to visit the region. However, the visit has met with local skepticism. Some residents have expressed frustration with government officials, citing past tensions regarding comments made by leadership about the instrumentalization of tragedy by conspiracy theorists. Local officials have called for significant financial support, with one mayor requesting a “Marshall Plan” to aid recovery.
