Le Wonder collective transforms Bobigny industrial site into artist hub

The Parisian artist collective Le Wonder has converted a 6,000-square-meter former industrial garage in Bobigny into a multipurpose facility for approximately 70 artists. Founded by artist Nelson Pernisco, the initiative provides studios, public programming, and extensive production capabilities, including ceramics, glass workshops, and a foundry.

By negotiating directly with property owners and legally occupying disused buildings, the collective aims to create a sustainable model of artistic independence that resists the typical gentrification cycle. This cycle often sees artists revitalize neglected areas only to be displaced by rising real estate costs.

The collective has undergone several relocations since its inception in 2012, moving from a smaller squat in the 19th arrondissement to the former Wonder battery factory before establishing its current site. Plans are underway to expand the facility, with some storage areas intended to house works from Parisian museum collections.
