LEADER funding programs open for rural development projects in Germany

Regional development initiatives in Germany are calling for new project applications through the LEADER funding program.

In the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district and the rural districts of Suhl, applicants have until August 30, 2026, to submit proposals for innovative rural projects. Regional managers from Sweco GmbH, who handle management for the RAG, are offering advisory services to help applicants navigate requirements such as financing, project sponsorship, and competitive bidding for planning services.

In the Donnersberger and Lautrer Land region, the Local Action Group (LAG) has extended its seventh LEADER call for proposals. Organizations, businesses, and individuals can now submit ideas until October 15, 2026. This extension is expected to be the final opportunity to secure funding within the current LEADER period. Eligible projects must contribute to local integrated rural development strategies, specifically focusing on health, tourism and culture, rural living, or nature, environment, and climate.
