Leag seeks new power plant solutions for coal sites

Energy company Leag is participating in German government tenders for new power plants to secure the future of its existing lignite-fired sites. CEO Adi Roesch stated that the company aims to find transition solutions for every location, including Jänschwalde and Schwarze Pumpe in Brandenburg, as well as Boxberg and Lippendorf in Saxony.

Leag plans to construct new gas-fired power plants that can later be converted to run on hydrogen. These facilities are intended to serve as a technological backup to complement renewable energy and battery storage, ensuring power supply security during periods of low renewable generation.

The initiative utilizes the framework of the power plant law, which seeks to establish plants capable of providing long-term, secure electricity. The Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) is currently evaluating projects following the completion of the first bidding round.
