League of Arab States urges enhanced early warning systems

The League of Arab States has emphasized the necessity of addressing escalating natural risks by strengthening monitoring infrastructure, fostering innovation, and expanding regional and international cooperation. This statement was issued by the General Secretariat on the occasion of Arab Meteorological Day, observed annually on September 15.

Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Economic Affairs Sector, Ambassador Dr. Ali bin Ibrahim Al-Malki, highlighted the pivotal role of Arab meteorological authorities as a primary line of defense against natural disasters. He noted the increasing risks posed by extreme weather phenomena, including El Niño, wildfires, floods, and earthquakes, which place significant pressure on vital sectors in Arab nations, particularly those affected by conflict.

The League aims to place climate issues at the core of its commitments by empowering Arab states to develop monitoring and forecasting systems, supporting data sharing, and raising awareness. Al-Malki also stressed the importance of utilizing artificial intelligence to improve weather and climate information management and enhance forecasting accuracy.
