Leah Purcell's The Drover’s Wife adapted into opera at Sydney Opera House

Leah Purcell's reimagining of Henry Lawson's classic Australian tale, "The Drover’s Wife," has been adapted into an opera composed by George Palmer. The production, which features a libretto co-written by Purcell and Palmer, is currently performing at the Sydney Opera House.

This iteration expands upon Purcell’s previous play, novel, and film versions by integrating European musical forms with Indigenous Australian dance, language, and storytelling. The narrative focuses on Molly Johnson, a mother protecting her children in the bush, while exploring themes of colonial violence, discrimination against First Nations peoples, and questions of identity and community.

The production features a cast led by Nina Korbe as Molly Johnson and Marcus Corowa as Yadaka, an Aboriginal man who becomes an ally to Molly. The opera aims to provide a ritualistic experience that addresses post-colonial race and gender relations through a combination of song and dance.
