Jockey Leandro Henrique dies after racing accident in Rio de Janeiro
Brazilian jockey Leandro Henrique has died at age 27 following a serious accident during a race at the Jockey Club Brasileiro in Gávea, Rio de Janeiro. The incident occurred on Sunday, August 16, during the second race of the day when his horse, Native Coffee, veered off course and jumped the perimeter fences.
The fall resulted in a traumatic brain injury and an exposed pelvic fracture. Henrique was initially treated on the track and rushed to Hospital Municipal Miguel Couto, where he underwent surgery. He was later transferred to a private facility, but his condition worsened, and he passed away in the early hours of Wednesday, August 19.
Henrique, originally from Recife, was a highly accomplished athlete with over a thousand victories, including Group 1 Grand Prix titles. He was a three-time statistical champion of jockeys. He is survived by his partner, trainer Victoria Mota, and their one-year-old daughter. The Jockey Club Brasileiro issued a statement expressing deep sadness and honoring his significant career in Brazilian turf.
