Leandro Leviste and six others face DOJ review over trafficking complaint

The Philippine Department of Justice (DOJ) is reviewing a qualified human trafficking complaint filed by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) against Batangas Representative Leandro Leviste, former Negros Oriental Representative Jacinto Paras, and six others.

The investigation involves an alleged “honey trap” or character assassination scheme targeting Executive Secretary Ralph Recto. According to NBI findings, the plot aimed to use fabricated statements from female artists claiming Recto forced them into illegal drug use and sexual acts. The NBI has recommended human trafficking charges against the respondents, which include four lawyers from the Rondain and Mendiola Law Firm.

Justice Secretary Frederick Vida stated that the DOJ has a 10-day window to decide whether to proceed to a preliminary investigation or dismiss the case and return it to the NBI. While the NBI alleges Leviste acted as a financier, representatives for Leviste have denied any involvement in the purported plot. Paras' side maintained that a talent manager approached them voluntarily to seek assistance with an affidavit.
