Leandro Paredes disputes FIFA 10-match ban after World Cup final

Argentine midfielder Leandro Paredes has criticized FIFA’s decision to impose a 10-match ban and a $90,000 fine following a post-match altercation during the 2026 World Cup final between Argentina and Spain. Paredes described the sanction as “excessive” and noted a disparity in punishment, pointing out that Spanish player Gavi received only a one-match suspension and a $30,000 fine despite allegedly punching Paredes in the chest.

The disciplinary actions stem from a brawl following Spain’s 1-0 extra-time victory. Reports indicate Paredes faced multiple counts of assault, including grabbing an opponent by the throat. Other Argentine sanctions include a seven-match ban for defender Nahuel Molina, a one-match ban for Thiago Almada, and a three-match ban for staff member Roberto Ayala.

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has been fined $321,000 for various breaches, including team misconduct and discriminatory chants. As part of the penalty, the AFA must limit stadium capacity to 50 percent for its next two home matches. The AFA is expected to appeal the individual player sanctions in hopes of a reduction.
