Lionel Scaloni enters contract renewal talks with Argentina

Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni has confirmed that negotiations are underway with the Argentine Football Association (AFA) to renew his contract, which is set to expire in December. Scaloni expressed a “willingness on both sides” to continue the project, noting that discussions with AFA president Claudio Tapia have officially begun. He also denied rumors regarding a potential move to River Plate, stating he will not listen to other offers until his current commitment concludes.

Amidst these leadership discussions, midfielder Leandro Paredes has reaffirmed his commitment to the national team. Despite serving a 10-match FIFA suspension following incidents during the 2026 World Cup final against Spain, Paredes stated, “I feel like I’m part of the team; if I weren’t suspended, I’d be there.” His comments come as the team prepares for upcoming matches and as Lionel Messi prepares for his expected international farewell.

Scaloni also addressed the team's transition, outlining a new captaincy hierarchy featuring Cuti Romero, Emiliano Martínez, and Lautaro Martínez. Regarding Messi’s iconic number 10 jersey, Scaloni noted that the number will remain unassigned until after Messi’s final appearance for the squad.
