Chinese EV brands expand presence in Australian market

The Australian electric vehicle market is seeing increased activity from Chinese manufacturers. BYD reports that fleet customers now account for approximately 20 per cent of its Australian sales, up from roughly 10 per cent at the end of 2025. The company aims to increase this mix to approximately 35 per cent, leveraging its factory-backed distribution model to build trust with corporate and government buyers.

BYD also recently introduced a drive-away deal for the Atto 1 hatch at $19,990, making it Australia's cheapest new car. However, executives indicated that the typical price of $23,990 will likely be reinstated after December 15, 2026.

Additionally, the Leapmotor B03 has received government approval for sale in Australia. The model, which includes a 130kW base unit and a 145kW variant, is expected to compete in the budget-friendly segment, with the B03X SUV variant potentially starting around $30,000.
