Leapmotor head addresses Australian market survival and data privacy
Leapmotor Australia head Andy Hoang has stated that not all Chinese automotive brands will survive the competitive Australian market, suggesting that some may fail to establish a sustainable foothold. While competitors like BYD, Chery, GWM, and MG have entered the top ten local sellers, Leapmotor has seen more modest growth since its November 2024 launch. Hoang emphasized that the company is focusing on building a sustainable business through product expansion and network growth rather than chasing volume alone.
Separately, Leapmotor is addressing concerns regarding data security following reports that its vehicles use cameras supplied by Dahua. While Dahua hardware was banned from Australian federal government buildings in 2023 due to spyware and human rights concerns, Hoang maintains that Leapmotor vehicles have undergone independent privacy certification. He noted that the cameras are intended for safety functionalities and that dashcam footage is only accessible via USB export. Hoang reported that only a small fraction of customers have expressed concern regarding data breaches.
