Leapmotor unveils LEAP 5.0 architecture and new battery technology
Leapmotor has unveiled its LEAP 5.0 New Mobile Space Architecture, a platform designed to maximize interior space and intelligence for future electric vehicle models. The architecture utilizes a new skateboard platform featuring a higher roof and a completely flat floor, which increases interior height by 63.7%. Additionally, a new vertical shock absorber configuration increases front passenger legroom by 37.5%, while the integration of the air conditioning unit and rear-mounted powertrain increases cabin length by 19%.
Technological advancements include the Cell-to-Chassis (CTC) 3.0 High-Low Fusion Battery. This system eliminates the need for a separate battery housing and can power low-voltage functions, potentially removing the requirement for a traditional 12-volt battery. The first vehicles utilizing this architecture are expected to be revealed in 2027.
As the company scales, Leapmotor is shifting its focus from pure vertical integration to strategic self-research. Senior Vice President Cao Li noted that while the company previously pursued self-development to establish credibility, it now uses a strict investment logic to decide whether to develop components in-house or source them externally based on cost-efficiency and innovation potential. Despite rising raw material costs affecting margins, Leapmotor aims to maintain its 'technology equality' strategy by passing cost savings from self-developed components back to consumers.
