Lebanon seizes 780kg of explosives at Dahr al-Baidar checkpoint

Lebanese authorities have seized a large shipment of explosives at the Dahr al-Baidar checkpoint on the highway linking Beirut to the Bekaa Valley. The intercepted truck was carrying 780 kilograms of explosives, which included 250 kilograms of TNT and 250 kilograms of C4 plastic explosives. Two suspects, believed to be linked to Hezbollah, were detained during the operation.

Prime Minister Nawaf Salam described the incident as a “criminal operation” and pledged a thorough investigation to track down those involved. Justice Minister Adel Nassar emphasized that efforts to disarm illegal groups and prosecute outlaws are accelerating. While some reports suggest the suspects may not have had official organizational ties to Hezbollah, the seizure has heightened concerns regarding the use of such materials for political assassinations or other militant activities.

In a separate operation, the Lebanese army reported seizing another 200-kilogram shipment of explosives being smuggled from Syria into the border town of al-Qasr. The army stated that the smugglers fled back into Syrian territory following the discovery. These incidents occur amid ongoing tensions and a government mandate to curb the military activities of non-state groups within the country.
