Lebanese fuel station owners warn of rising operational costs

The Executive Council of the Lebanese Fuel Station Owners Syndicate, led by Captain George Bakhos, held an extraordinary meeting to address the escalating financial and operational challenges facing the sector. The syndicate issued a statement warning that the fixed commission rates set by the Ministry of Energy and Water no longer cover actual operating costs.

According to the syndicate, costs have multiplied due to sharp increases in municipal fees, National Social Security Fund contributions, and residency fees for foreign workers. Additionally, high electricity generator costs and general inflation have further strained owners, while sales volumes have declined by 20% to 30%. The syndicate criticized the government for fixing commissions—effectively turning owners into ‘quasi-employees’ with fixed salaries—while simultaneously increasing taxes and fees.

While the syndicate has avoided strikes or negative actions to prevent paralyzing the country's vital fuel sector, they emphasized that their restraint does not mean a waiver of their rights. They have called on political officials to avoid politicizing the issue and are continuing negotiations with relevant authorities to secure fair solutions.
