Lebanese leaders meet EU High Representative Kaja Kallas

Lebanese leadership met with European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas to discuss regional security, the mandate of UNIFIL, and strategic cooperation.

Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri warned against the expiration of the UNIFIL mandate without a UN-backed alternative, describing such a move as an attack on international legitimacy and Resolution 1701. Berri emphasized that Israel has failed to adhere to various agreements, ranging from Resolution 425 to the November 2024 agreement.

President Joseph Aoun expressed Lebanon's desire for a strategic partnership with the EU, noting the link between Lebanese stability and European security. He welcomed discussions regarding a civil-military mission under the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) to provide training and advisory support.

Lebanese officials highlighted that the Lebanese Army is fulfilling its duties south of the Litani River in accordance with the framework agreement, while accusing Israel of continued violations and attacks. Lebanon is also working with the United States to pressure Israel to implement the framework agreement and remains committed to economic reforms required for an IMF agreement.
