Lebanese President Joseph Aoun meets Pope Leo XIV in Vatican
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun met with Pope Leo XIV and Vatican officials, including Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin and Archbishop Richard Gallagher, to discuss the ongoing conflict and peace efforts in Lebanon.
Aoun urged the Holy See to continue its diplomatic efforts to ensure Israel implements the terms of the Trilateral Framework Agreement, signed on June 26 under U.S. auspices. He called for an immediate cessation of Israeli attacks on civilians and infrastructure in southern Lebanon and demanded a full Israeli withdrawal from occupied territories to facilitate reconstruction and the return of displaced persons.
The President emphasized that these steps must coincide with the extension of Lebanese state authority over its entire territory. Meanwhile, the Holy See expressed satisfaction with the framework agreement but voiced serious concerns regarding the difficulties encountered in its implementation.
