Lebanese President Joseph Aoun meets Pope Leo XIV in Vatican

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun met with Pope Leo XIV and Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin in the Vatican to discuss regional stability and the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Aoun expressed gratitude for the Holy See's support and urged the Pope to advocate for Lebanon's demands. These include the immediate cessation of Israeli attacks on civilians and infrastructure in southern Lebanon, the implementation of the June 26 framework agreement signed in Washington, and the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from occupied Lebanese territories to allow for reconstruction and the return of displaced citizens.

The discussions also touched upon the need for Lebanese state authority to be extended across the entire country. Amidst these diplomatic efforts, the Lebanese Parliament has moved to approve general amnesty and the official abolition of the death penalty. Additionally, Aoun is seeking international support to secure a peacekeeping presence in southern Lebanon as an alternative to UNIFIL, whose mandate is set to expire in late 2026.
