Lebanese President Joseph Aoun to meet Pope Leo XIV amid stalled Israel negotiations

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun is scheduled to meet with Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican on August 20, 2026. This diplomatic visit occurs amid ongoing and difficult negotiations between Lebanon and Israel, as southern Lebanon continues to face Israeli military strikes.

Simultaneously, efforts to facilitate a breakthrough in security negotiations remain stalled. A recent visit by U.S. General Joseph Clearfield, head of the special military coordination group for Lebanon, did not yield the expected results. While Washington maintains that the door for negotiations remains open, reports suggest that Israel is not currently prepared to make significant concessions. Instead, Israel appears focused on establishing new realities in southern Lebanon to maintain its positions through its upcoming October elections.

Key obstacles to a lasting arrangement include the lack of a decided mechanism for verifying the withdrawal of weapons and uncertainty regarding the composition of an international supervisory body. Potential participants in such an oversight instance include the United Kingdom, Italy, Switzerland, and Canada.
