Greece and Lebanon upgrade relations to strategic partnership

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun met with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Athens to upgrade bilateral relations into a strategic partnership. The discussions focused on defense, energy, and regional stability.

In terms of security, Greece has provided significant military support to the Lebanese Armed Forces, including the recent delivery of armored personnel carriers and utility vehicles. Mitsotakis emphasized Greece’s commitment to Lebanon’s sovereignty, unity, and the protection of its multicultural character, particularly its Christian communities.

The two leaders also addressed economic and energy cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean. This includes potential energy infrastructure projects and the establishment of a High Council of Cooperation covering foreign policy, defense, energy, and culture. The partnership aims to bolster Lebanon’s institutional strength and its role in regional economic developments, following recent maritime boundary agreements in the Mediterranean.
