Lebanese University professors strike over tenure disputes
Contracted professors and tenured faculty at the Lebanese University have announced strikes affecting all academic and administrative operations across the institution's various branches. The strikes, scheduled for September 29 and 30, 2026, are driven by demands to resolve the tenure file for contracted professors.
The Committee of Contracted Professors expressed frustration following the cancellation of a scheduled meeting with the Minister of Education and Higher Education, Rima Karami. The committee described the cancellation as a “negative message” and called for a mass protest in front of the Ministry on Wednesday, September 30.
Simultaneously, the Executive Body of the Association of Tenured Professors has declared a strike, stating that delays in approving the tenure file create job instability and weaken the university's ability to fulfill its national mission. The faculty groups are calling on Prime Minister Nawaf Salam to include the tenure issue on the agenda of the first cabinet meeting following his return from abroad.
