Lebanon and Israel to hold military talks in Florida
Lebanon and Israel are expected to hold an eighth round of military-focused negotiations in Tampa, Florida, likely on October 20. This meeting, facilitated by the United States, occurs approximately one week before the Israeli Knesset elections scheduled for October 27.
The discussions will primarily address field realities, security arrangements, and the implementation of the Framework Agreement signed on June 26. A Lebanese delegation, led by former Ambassador Simon Karam and including military officials such as Operations Director Brigadier General George Rizkallah, is expected to attend. The talks will be overseen by U.S. General Joseph Clairfield.
Key objectives for the Lebanese delegation include securing a ceasefire that encompasses a cessation of hostilities, expanding the experimental zone to include occupied towns, and establishing a verification mechanism for the Lebanese Army's deployment. Lebanon also intends to raise the issue of Lebanese prisoners held by Israel. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has reportedly urged U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, to pressure Israel to adhere to the Framework Agreement, emphasizing a reciprocal and phased approach to Israeli withdrawal and the exclusivity of weapons in the region.
