Syria and Lebanon crack down on former Assad-era officers and terror plots
Syrian and Lebanese authorities have taken significant legal actions against remnants of the former Bashar al-Assad regime. In Syria, security forces arrested five former air force officers, including a major general, accused of planning and executing intensive airstrikes on populated civilian areas during the previous administration. These operations, coordinated with the Counter Terrorism Directorate, targeted individuals involved in using airbases and command centers to cause mass displacement and casualties.
Simultaneously, a Lebanese military court has charged 14 individuals, including a Hezbollah member and a former Syrian intelligence officer, with forming a criminal gang to launch terrorist attacks on the Syrian coast. Investigations suggest the network smuggled more than 40 former Assad regime members through illegal crossings in northern Lebanon. The group allegedly received training in explosives, sniper rifles, and drone operation at camps in eastern Lebanon. Authorities claim the network was overseen by a Hezbollah official, Yasser Alaa al-Din, and managed by Major General Mohammad Jaber, who is reportedly currently in Moscow.
