Lebanon divided after security forces seize Hezbollah explosives
Lebanese security forces intercepted a minivan at a checkpoint in Dahr el-Baydar on October 5, discovering hundreds of kilograms of explosives, including TNT and C-4. The seizure has sparked significant political division within the country.
Hezbollah MP Hassan Fadlallah issued a statement claiming the explosives belong to the group and are intended for use against Israeli forces in southern Lebanon rather than for internal use. Fadlallah demanded the return of the materials and the release of two individuals detained during the incident, warning authorities against escalating measures.
Conversely, political opponents of the Iranian-backed group expressed concern that the smuggled explosives could be used against domestic detractors. Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam noted that C-4 explosives have been utilized in previous assassinations, though investigators have not yet established a direct link to this specific seizure.
