Lebanon faces deepening humanitarian crisis as war and economic collapse strain aid efforts
On the anniversary of the August 2020 Beirut port explosion, the Austrian development organization Jugend Eine Welt warned that Lebanon remains in a severe humanitarian emergency. The blast destroyed large parts of the capital and killed hundreds, and the country has since endured a prolonged economic downturn, the COVID‑19 pandemic and now renewed conflict sparked by fighting between Iran‑backed Hezbollah and Israel/US forces. The violence has further destabilised Lebanon, driving millions of people to rely on external assistance.
Reinhard Heiserer, CEO of Jugend Eine Welt, said, “The people in Lebanon have endured crisis after crisis – the port explosion, the economic collapse, the pandemic and now war and displacement. Many families never had a chance to recover, making our on‑the‑ground help essential.” The NGO is mobilising aid to address the escalating needs of the population.
