Lebanon Health Ministry launches national lung‑cancer awareness campaign with AstraZeneca

On World Lung Cancer Day, Lebanon's Ministry of Public Health partnered with AstraZeneca to launch a national campaign aimed at reducing lung‑cancer deaths. The initiative, titled “ extinguish the smoke… light safety, and detect early,” highlights the dangers of all forms of smoking, promotes early screening, and features a 3‑D light display on the ministry building. It is part of the 2023‑2028 national cancer plan and includes measures such as new tobacco‑warning labels, the reactivation of the national anti‑tobacco committee, training for primary‑care centres on smoking cessation, and a procurement programme for cancer medicines.

A separate study released on the same day in Egypt linked clonal hematopoiesis—a blood‑cell mutation that increases with age—to a higher risk of lung cancer among people exposed to air pollution. Analyzing data from more than 650,000 participants, the research suggests that genetic and biological factors, together with environmental exposure, shape individual susceptibility, pointing toward more personalized prevention strategies.
