Lebanon leadership condemns Israeli airstrikes in southern Ansar
Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon have resulted in the deaths of at least seven people, including women and children, in the village of Ansar. The strikes, which targeted areas including Nabatieh and Deir Zeitouni, have drawn sharp condemnation from Lebanese leadership.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun characterized the attacks as a ‘clear message’ that could impact the future of upcoming negotiations between Israel and Lebanon scheduled for September in Rome. He described the strikes as violations of international law and existing framework agreements designed to protect civilians.
Prime Minister Nawaf Salam called for an immediate end to the military escalation. He emphasized that the Lebanese state holds exclusive responsibility for any military structures within its borders, rejecting the notion that civilians should be treated as military targets. While the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated the operations targeted Hezbollah infrastructure following attacks on Israeli soldiers, Lebanese officials maintain that the casualties were civilians.
