Lebanon NSSF moves to extend social security to municipal workers

Mohammad Karki, Director General of Lebanon’s National Social Security Fund (NSSF), met with a delegation from the Federation of Municipality Workers and Employees Unions to discuss the final stages of bringing municipal workers under social security coverage.

The initiative follows parliamentary approval to include municipal employees in three NSSF branches: sickness and maternity insurance, family allowances, and end-of-service indemnity. The coverage is also intended to align with future retirement and social protection laws.

During the meeting, union representatives expressed appreciation for the move, noting it has been awaited for over 20 years to provide stability amidst difficult economic conditions. They raised concerns regarding the potential loss of specific benefits previously provided by certain municipalities. Karki assured the delegation that the law aims to improve conditions without compromising existing rights that exceed NSSF provisions, particularly for those currently lacking basic health coverage.
