Lebanon: UNICEF reports one in five children face hunger

A new UNICEF report, titled ‘An Enduring Nightmare’, reveals a deepening humanitarian crisis for children in Lebanon. At least one in five households report that children are going to bed hungry, while a similar number of families lack access to safe drinking water.

The conflict has caused severe physical and psychological harm. Since March 2, 2026, at least 261 children have been killed and 1,056 injured, averaging seven children per day. Approximately 12 percent of these injured children now live with disabilities. Furthermore, an estimated 770,000 children and young people are experiencing profound psychological distress.

Economic and social structures are also failing. About 31 percent of families report that children have missed necessary medical care due to costs, and 14 percent say at least one child is working—a figure that has more than doubled since January 2025. Education is under threat as 436 schools have been damaged or destroyed, putting roughly 100,000 children at risk of losing access to schooling.
