Lebanon: Political dispute intensifies over judicial referral case
A political dispute in Lebanon regarding the referral of the ‘Dahr al-Baidar truck’ case to the Judicial Council has escalated into a broader struggle for Christian political representation. While a recent cabinet session did not officially drop the proposal, the failure to bring it to a vote led to the withdrawal of ministers from the Lebanese Forces party in protest.
Justice Minister Adel Nassar has indicated that he does not view the delay as a retreat and intends to reintroduce the referral in a cabinet session in two weeks. The impasse has moved beyond a legal disagreement, becoming a tool for political maneuvering among Christian leaders. Figures such as Samir Geagea have maintained a hardline stance to demonstrate political strength, while President Joseph Aoun seeks to contain the division to prevent internal government collapse.
Observers note that the disagreement between the Presidency (Baabda) and the Lebanese Forces (Maarab) centers on the methodology of governance rather than ultimate goals. While the Lebanese Forces demand greater accountability and a clear link between political decisions and security implementation, the Presidency aims to stabilize state authority without triggering internal confrontation.
