Beirut port blast families demand justice on sixth anniversary
Six years after the August 4, 2020 explosion at Beirut’s port – which killed more than 220 people and injured over 6,500 – families of victims gathered at the blast site to call for accountability. They urged the Lebanese authorities to complete investigations and issue a public indictment.
Judge Tarek Bitar has finished a probe that named roughly 70 suspects, including current and former politicians, security officials and civil servants. The public prosecutor is now preparing the indictment, with Justice Minister Adel Nassar saying it should be delivered within 60‑90 days. President Joseph Aoun called the issuance of the indictment a “necessity that can no longer be delayed,” and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam pledged no cover‑up for any official.
The families, represented by groups such as the “Families of the Beirut Port Explosion Victims,” continue to demand that all responsible parties be summoned and tried, emphasizing that the wound of the disaster remains unhealed.
