Lebanon seeks urgent U.S.-hosted military talks with Israel

Lebanese officials are pushing the United States to host a military meeting between Lebanon and Israel in Florida before upcoming elections in both Israel and the United States. Lebanon seeks to avoid delaying negotiations beyond the Israeli Knesset elections on October 27 and the U.S. midterm elections on November 3.

There are concerns that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu may delay implementing the existing ‘Framework Agreement’ to avoid political concessions regarding the disarmament of Hezbollah before the elections. Lebanese officials fear that postponing the talks could lead to a prolonged political vacuum or leave the country subject to the shifting political dynamics in Israel.

U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Michel Issa has reportedly not yet confirmed a date for the military meeting, which is tentatively discussed for late this month. While the Ambassador has privately suggested that postponing the meeting might prevent it from becoming a mere symbolic gesture without substantive results, Lebanon continues to seek American guarantees to ensure the meeting's success and the implementation of the agreement.
