Lebou Community Leader Youssou Ndoye Dies in Senegal

Jaraaf Youssou Ndoye, the senior traditional leader of Senegal's Lebou community, died on Thursday, 16 July 2026 at Dakar’s Principal Hospital after a prolonged illness. In a video released by Kawtef, his son explained that despite medical treatment, his health steadily worsened until his passing. Ndoye was widely respected as a mediator and guardian of Lebou traditions, frequently called upon to resolve local tensions and preserve cultural heritage.

His death prompted an outpouring of condolences from state, religious and customary authorities, who praised his wisdom and dedication. A funeral ceremony is scheduled for Friday, 17 July 2026, drawing members of the community and notable figures to honor his legacy.

The loss is described as creating a profound void within the Lebou community, which regards Ndoye as a central figure in maintaining social cohesion and transmitting ancestral values to younger generations.
