LeBron James' possible free‑agency move fuels Lakers rebuild, says teammate Austin Reaves

Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James is expected to become an unrestricted free agent, with speculation that he may return to Cleveland or join the Brooklyn Nets. The uncertainty surrounds the franchise as it evaluates its future without the 39‑year‑old star, who has been with the team since 2018 and helped win two titles.

Lakers guard Austin Reaves, a key player under a four‑year, $185 million max contract, said James’ exit "ruined" his day and noted the challenge of adapting to a roster without him. Reaves emphasized the need for the team to evolve, relying on younger talent such as Anthony Davis, D’Angelo Russell and rookie Jalen Hood. The Lakers missed the playoffs last season, finishing 42‑40, and now face decisions on free‑agency signings and possible trades as they aim to remain competitive.

Reaves highlighted his own growth, averaging 12.1 points and 6.8 assists last season, and expressed confidence in the squad’s direction despite the looming offseason changes.
