Lecce authorities consider motorcycle ban on SP 358

Authorities in Lecce are evaluating a potential temporary ban on motorcycles and mopeds on the SP 358 highway, which connects Otranto and Santa Maria di Leuca. The proposal follows a technical meeting led by Prefect Natalino Manno involving police, fire services, local administrations, and emergency responders.

The measure is being considered in response to dangerous driving behaviors, speeding, and unauthorized motor competitions that have turned the scenic coastal road into a high-risk area. This decision follows a fatal accident on September 27 that claimed the lives of two young motorcyclists.

In consultation with the Public Prosecutor's Office, the Prefecture and the Province of Lecce are examining an ordinance under Article 6 of the Highway Code. This could result in a temporary ban of up to six months, extendable if necessary, to ensure public safety and protect citizens.
