Lecce Court Rules Black Box Data Insufficient in 2021 Traffic Accident
The Court of Lecce (Italy) issued ruling No. 1142/2026 confirming that a woman who was seriously injured in a 2021 traffic collision was rightfully awarded compensation and that the driver of the vehicle was fully liable. The judgement rejected the insurer’s claim that the vehicle’s “black‑box” data alone proved a different accident scenario, noting flaws in GPS accuracy and the lack of certified technical specifications. The court emphasized that such data cannot be treated as conclusive evidence without corroboration from testimony, medical reports and expert analysis.
The decision underscores the limited probative value of vehicle telemetry in legal disputes and may affect how similar evidence is evaluated in future Italian civil cases.
