Lecce Mayor visits local dog shelter to address abandonment

The Mayor of Lecce, Vito Leccese, visited a sanitary dog shelter and refuge managed by the association Nati per Amarti ODV to inspect facility conditions and evaluate necessary improvements for animal care.

The shelter currently houses approximately 130 dogs. Officials noted a rise in animal abandonment during the summer months, with 32 dogs arriving at the facility since June. The presence of many pitbull-type dogs has prompted discussions regarding the need for increased local monitoring, including microchip verification and mapping of owned animals.

During the visit, attention was drawn to a group of two-month-old puppies born at the shelter after their mother was abandoned. Mayor Leccese emphasized the importance of responsible and conscious adoption to combat the trend of seasonal abandonment.
