Lecce mother faces trial for severe abuse of 9‑year‑old daughter

A 41‑year‑old woman of Peruvian origin living in the Salento area has been charged with aggravated child abuse. Prosecutors allege that between 2024 and March 2025 she repeatedly beat her nine‑year‑old daughter, inflicted bites, threw glass objects at her and forced a towel into the child's mouth to silence her cries. The mother is said to have acted while under the influence of alcohol, creating a constant atmosphere of fear in the home. The daughter was removed from the household and placed in a protective community in March 2025. The Lecce public prosecutor has requested that a judge issue an indictment; a preliminary hearing is scheduled for 16 November before the Tribunal of Lecce. If convicted, the mother faces a prison term for multiple aggravated offenses of child maltreatment.
