Lecce police seize sewage tanker after illegal dump in agricultural field

Local police in Lecce intervened after a citizen reported a sewage spill on an agricultural plot along Via Adriatica. Officers found an autospurgo (sewage tanker) parked at the roadside with a hose discharging liquid waste directly onto the soil. The driver and a companion, who said they worked for a regional waste‑management firm, were detained and charged under Italy’s environmental protection code for illegal waste disposal. The vehicle was placed under judicial seizure.

Municipal authorities highlighted the danger of contaminating groundwater and farmland, stressing the public‑health risk. Police commander Donato Zacheo thanked the reporting citizen, and assessor Giancarlo Capoccia affirmed the municipality’s commitment to monitoring and preventing environmental crimes.
