Lecce prison: Clan clashes and staffing shortages spark security crisis

Violent clashes broke out at the Lecce prison between rival groups belonging to the Strisciuglio and Capriati clans from Bari. The conflict reportedly involved inmates using improvised clubs and was driven by disputes over the control of illicit activities, including the smuggling of drugs and mobile phones via drones.

During the unrest, a single prison officer was surrounded by inmates who threatened him and attempted to seize his cell keys. Despite the immediate danger, the officer managed to trigger a general alarm via radio, allowing other personnel to intervene and restore order.

The Sappe prison police union has denounced the incident, citing severe overcrowding and critical staffing shortages as primary security risks. The facility currently holds approximately 1,500 inmates despite a designed capacity of only 800. Additionally, the union reports a shortage of at least 300 to 350 officers required to maintain safety standards.
