Lecco housing: AVS calls for affordable units after student project funding fails

The cancellation of PNRR funding for a planned student residence in via dell’Eremo, Germanedo, has prompted calls to repurpose the public properties for affordable housing. The political group Alleanza Verdi e Sinistra (AVS) in Lecco suggests that the halt to the project should serve as an opportunity to re-evaluate the use of available public real estate.

While AVS acknowledges the importance of accommodating students to support the future of the community, they argue that the local real estate market has shifted significantly. The rise of short-term tourist rentals and temporary stays has reduced the supply of traditional long-term leases. Furthermore, they contend that the location in Germanedo may not be ideal for students attending the Politecnico campus in Pescarenico.

AVS is calling for a dialogue between ALER, the Lombardy Region, and the Municipality of Lecco to return these apartments to their original purpose: providing housing for families, low-income workers, and young residents who are currently priced out of the private market.
