Lecco pier history: The Adda River's role in transporting goods to Milan

The historical importance of the Lecco pier (imbarcadero) and its role in regional transport is highlighted through historical records and early 20th-century imagery. Before the dominance of trains and trams, the Adda River and Lake Como served as a vital network for moving people and goods.

During the period following the first and second industrial revolutions, the pier acted as a major transit point. Specifically, in the Adda area, goods such as metallurgical products were loaded onto barges for transport to Milan.

The physical structure of the pier has undergone significant changes over the last century. A 1912 postcard depicts an original building with a characteristic barrel-shaped roof, a common architectural style for transport facilities in the region at that time. Today, this has been replaced by a modern building featuring a flat roof and large glass windows, housing a bar where a traveler refreshment point once stood.
