Lech Wałęsa responds after dismissal of false testimony investigation
The Warsaw District Prosecutor's Office has dismissed an investigation into former Polish President Lech Wałęsa regarding allegations of providing false testimony. The case centered on the authenticity of signatures on documents found in the files of General Czesław Kiszczak, which suggested Wałęsa had collaborated with the Security Service (SB) under the pseudonym ‘Bolek’.
The prosecution's decision to drop the case was based on questioning the reliability of handwriting expert opinions from the Jan Sehn Institute of Forensic Research. Prosecutors noted that the experts could not definitively attribute the signatures to Wałęsa and highlighted that the evidence did not sufficiently prove he authored the long-form documents in question.
In response, Wałęsa released a video addressing the dismissal and the public reaction. He addressed the prosecution's characterization of him as a ‘secondary illiterate’ during the 1970s, stating that his limited writing abilities at the time actually allowed him to pursue his political goals by being underestimated by the communist regime. He criticized his opponents for using the legal proceedings to attack his legacy and the history of the Solidarity movement.
