Lechia Gdańsk goalkeeper Mateusz Bąk dies at 43

Mateusz Bąk, the former goalkeeper of Polish club Lechia Gdańsk, died on Monday, 3 August 2026 at the age of 43. The club confirmed his death and expressed deep condolences to his family and the football community. Bąk, born 24 February 1983, played for Lechia in two spells (2001‑2011 and 2013‑2017), appearing in 245 matches and even scoring a goal, and was a key figure in the team’s rise from the regional A‑class to the top‑flight Ekstraklasa.

After retiring in 2017, he worked as a goalkeeping coach for Lechia’s youth teams. Gdańsk mayor Aleksandra Dulkjevič also issued a statement, praising Bąk as a beloved figure who devoted his life to the club and the city. The news has been widely shared among fans and the local community, highlighting his legacy as a symbol of loyalty and dedication.
