Électricité du Liban cuts power to public sector entities over unpaid debts

Électricité du Liban (EDL) has begun cutting electricity supplies to various public administrations, institutions, and municipalities that failed to settle their outstanding debts within a five-day grace period. The decision follows a board resolution aimed at securing funds to maintain public utility services amidst rising global fuel and oil costs.

Among the entities affected by the cuts are the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, including the Land Registry and Survey departments, the National Social Security Fund, the Agricultural Research Institute, the Sports City authority, and the National Council for Scientific Research.

Reports indicate significant arrears across several sectors. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation owes approximately $29.41 million, while the Lebanese Army has already moved to settle its dues. Other notable debtors include the Directorate General of Internal Security Forces and the Beirut University Hospital. Water institutions in South Lebanon, the Bekaa, and the North also face substantial outstanding balances, totaling roughly $135.62 million collectively.

Within the ministries, the Ministry of Telecommunications holds the highest arrears at approximately $8.49 million, followed by the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Education. EDL has urged all remaining debtors to settle their accounts through official channels to ensure the continuity of the power supply.
