Ledger announces Atom, an Android-based crypto signer

Ledger has unveiled the Atom, a new device described as a signer rather than a traditional hardware wallet. Presented at the Op3n event in Paris, the device features an Android-based operating system combined with a dedicated Ledger OS running on a separate secure element chip.

Technically, the Atom functions as a data-only Android device with an eSIM supporting 4G and 5G connectivity, though it lacks support for traditional phone calls and SMS. It includes a 6.8-inch AMOLED display, a 50-megapixel camera, and a 4,000-mAh battery. To enhance security, a physical switch can disconnect the camera and microphone from power, and an FPGA physically separates the Android processor from the secure display and touch interface during sensitive transactions.

The device also integrates AI capabilities via the Ledger Agent Intent platform to monitor markets and prepare transactions. The Founder's Edition is priced at $849, with a standard retail price of $899. Deliveries are expected to begin in mid-to-late 2027. Notably, Ledger intends to sell the Atom exclusively through its own shop, a move following reports of manipulated devices being sold through third-party retailers in Southeast Asia.
