Lee Chang-dong's 'Possible Love' premieres at Venice, eyes Oscar eligibility and wins TIFF Ebert Director Award
South Korean auteur Lee Chang-dong returns to feature filmmaking after eight years with "Possible Love," a drama that contrasts the lives of a laid‑off worker and his wife with an affluent documentary filmmaker and her husband. The film will debut in competition at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, then open in the Special Presentations section of the Toronto International Film Festival. A limited theatrical release is scheduled in South Korea for September 23, followed by a worldwide streaming launch on Netflix on November 6.
Netflix is providing key financing and will arrange a U.S. theatrical run to satisfy the Academy’s eligibility rules for the 99th Oscars. The cast features veteran Korean actors Jeon Do‑yeon, Sul Kyung‑gu, Cho Yeo‑jeong and Zo In‑sung. In addition, Lee became the first Korean director to receive the TIFF Ebert Director Award at the festival’s Tribute Awards ceremony on September 13, recognizing his lifetime contribution to cinema.
